O Gauge Rail Cleaner Model 60050
Instructions
Description:
Basically, the cleaner is a fairly heavy absorbent roller that is saturated with any of a wide variety of available cleaning fluids. The roller is guided along the rails by the frame of the cleaner assembly – but the roller is allowed to "float" and will press firmly onto the rails. The absorbent roller cover is resilient and there is friction at the roller pushing surface of the frame. Due to the interaction of force and friction, the roller will resist rolling to some degree, and will actually be slipping on the rails (even when turning). This patented "Limited Slip" feature provides the action to clean the rails.
The fluid that remains on the rails (before evaporation) will loosen built-up “crud” from the wheels of any locomotives and cars that follow. After several passes, the rails and the wheels of all rolling stock should be electrically clean and free from wheel slippage.
Instructions:
- Snap one end cap onto a roller cover.
- Load the roller cover ½ to ¾ full with loose weight.
(Pennies, BB shot, screws, nuts, bolts may be used for weight)
- Snap the other end cap onto the roller cover.
- Dampen the roller cover with your favorite track cleaning fluid.
NOTE – We do not recommend the use of water-based cleaning fluids.
- Place the roller cover into the railcar frame and push or pull it around your layout a few times (or leave it in the train) to clean your rails and wheels.
- When the roller cover get very dirty, it’s best to replace it with a clean one because a dirty roller cover can put almost as much “crud” back onto the rails as it cleaned off.
NOTE - When the rails are electrically clean (depending on the type of cleaning fluid being used) it is still possible to wipe some "black" from the rails with a clean cloth. This is normal and should present no problems with traction or electrical conductivity.
There are some suitable cleaning fluids available at drugstores, supermarkets, and hardware stores. BE VERY CAREFUL – SOME FLUIDS MAY BE FLAMMABLE, MAY PRODUCE TOXIC VAPORS, OR MAY DISSOLVE SOME PLASTICS! CHECK THE LABELS!
Replacement Roller Covers:
Roller covers may be washed and reused – Throw them in with your socks.
Replacement roller covers are easily made from SHUR-LINE® 3” Touch-Up Paint Roller Covers (available at most paint supply and hardware stores). Cut length is equal to 1 7/8” to 1 29/32” (48-49 mm).
Properly sized replacement roller covers are available at your local hobby dealer in packages of six roller covers (including an extra pair of end caps) in a re-usable plastic box.
Replacement or custom trucks and couplers, and replacement bolster screws are available through your local hobby dealer.
